Dr. B.K. Swain isretiredProfessor and former Head of the Department of Sociology, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur. He obtained his Master’s degree, M. Phil and Ph.D. in Sociology from the Department of Sociology, Nagpur University. He has 33 years of teaching and 30 years of research experience in sociology. The core areas of his interest include Classical, Modern and Critical Theories, Social Change, Mobility and Development, Women’s Studies, Sociology of Ageing, Sociology of Leisure and Work, and Methodology in Social Research. He has authored two books, one on “Changing Occupational Structure in Vidarbha, India”, published by Himalaya Publishing House, Mumbai, and the other on “Child Labour in India”, published by Dattsons, Nagpur. He has contributed several research papers to various research journals in India. By now, twelve scholars have already obtained doctoral degree on various problem areas in sociology under his supervision, with eight more still pursuing research under him for the same degree. Dr. Swain has presented two research papers in international conferences, one at the International Sociological Association’s World Congress of Sociology at Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2010, and the other at Palermo University, Italy, in 2011. Besides Sweden and Italy, he has visited the other countries like Norway, Finland and Denmark. He has been regularly presenting research papers in All India Sociological Conferences and delivering keynote addresses in various national and state level seminars hosted by various Universities and colleges in different states in the country. He has been also frequently invited for chairing technical sessions and delivering talks at the all India, national and state level seminars. He has been regularly organizing state and national level seminars and workshops on the themes involving societal concerns, issues and problems. So far he has organized three national and three state level seminars, one international conference, two University level seminars and four workshops, besides regularly organizing students’ seminars for last five years. He has to his credit a national seminar proceeding on “Female Foeticide in India: A Moving Trend” and an international conference proceeding on “Ageing Through the Ages: From Past to Present and Future”, both published by Dattsons, Nagpur. He is being regularly invited by various Universities as a member of RRC, examination committee and selection committee for recruitment of various faculty positions of the teaching department. He has completed two research projects sanctioned by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. He is a life member of various professional bodies like Indian Sociological Society, Marathi Samaj Sashtra Parishad, Indian Society of Human Rights, International Sociological Association and International Sociological Association’s Research Committee on Sociology of Leisure.
Dr. Ashok T. Borkar
Present Head and Associate Professor

Dr. Ashok T. Borkar at present Associate Professor and Head at Department of Sociology, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University. He did his Master’s degree in sociology from Hislop College, Nagpur, and obtained a Ph.D. in the same subject from Nagpur University. He has 18 years of teaching and 16 years of research experience to his credit. His areas of interest cover Gender Studies, Sociology of Human Rights, Subaltern Studies, Tribal Studies, Sociology of Social Movements and Sociology of Social Change and Development. He has published a book entitled ‘Deceptive Development of Deprived: A case study of Korkus of Melghat’. The book is written in Marathi language. He has few research publications to his credit. He has presented twenty two papers in national seminars and six in international conferences/seminars. He organized one national round table conference entitled, ‘Naxal in Indian State’ in 2010. He completed one short-term major project, funded by NTPC Mouda, entitled: Assessment Survey of Project Affected Peoples of NTPC Mouda, Nagpur, funded by NTPC Mouda, in 2008-09. He is one of the founding members as well as the editor of the Journal of Interdisciplinary Policy Research and Action (IPRA). He is the life member of Marathi Samaj Sashtra Parishad and Indian Sociological Society. Several scholars are pursuing research for doctoral degrees under his supervision.
