The Department of History was established in the year 1958. Earlier it was located at Babasahed Kolte Library, Ramdaspeth, Nagpur. Later it was shifted to present Humanities building somewhere in 1965. Dr. V.R. Deoras from Morries College was the In-charge for two years and later Dr. B.K. Apte was appointed as First HODof the Department. Today the department of History is an Autonomous department and it has adopted the NEP-2020 based syllabus from 2023-2024 session. The department runs M.A. course and Ph.D. Program. Thus, it is Research Centre also.

The Nagpur University was established on 4th August, 1923 with six affiliated colleges and 927 students.
