Centre's Profile: Inception

The establishment of Rajiv Gandhi Biotechnology Centre proved to be the much-needed shot-in-the arm to the Teaching, Research and Development activities in the field of Microbial Biotechnology in Vidarbha. Rajiv Gandhi Biotechnology Centre always aims to carry out various measures to make Education more meaningful and practical, and to explore the opportunities for the students to develop their personalities in a holistic way

The M.Sc. Biotechnology Teaching Course is envisaged to cater to the needs of the Food Industry, Pharmaceutical Industry, Various applications in Genetic Engineering and Molecular Biology, also Environment-Friendly Applications of the Biotechnology particularly in the National & International institutions / organizations, universities, public & private sectors etc. The M.Sc. Biotechnology Course related to ‘Fermentation Biotechnology, Environmental/ Industrial Biotechnology, Plant & Animal Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Medical Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Ethics & Patenting’ is based on semester pattern & choice based credit system, with comprehensive inclusion of Practical syllabi having analytical aspects of above mentioned areas, and Seminars, Project / Dissertation work. It is a constant endeavor of the Centre to strive and place the students under internship in reputed Research and Corporate organizations. The establishment of ‘Nirmiti study circle’ for M.Sc. & Ph.D. students reflects on new ideas and technologies sharing latest information on emerging trends, events and personalities who are involved in research, designing and working on Biotechnologies. The existing syllabi has been updated & implemented in the academic year of 2018-19., as per advanced, need based & model curriculum recommended by the UGC, New Delhi. Further, the upgraded, Choice based Credit System (CBCS) is at par with the National & International levels addressing manpower requirements for Biotechnological Research & Commercialization’s Standards, which are being adopted by the Rajiv Gandhi Biotechnology Centre for running the Biotechnology teaching programme.

This centre, established in 1995, conducts mission-oriented research work with well-defined mandate for the use of proven bio-tech product/ process development and transfer of technology with regard to biofertilizers and biopesticides and probiotics, to the tribal, rural and semi-urban areas in Vidarbha for use in agriculture, health and environmental protection. Vernacular language and local dialects are routinely used to ensure effective communication, also striking a rapport with the sons of the soil. The Centre's efforts towards an indigenous, low cost, eco-friendly lab-to-land transfer of technology especially implemented in Vidarbha for Socio-economic upliftment have been appreciated remarkably by the apex bodies like National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and University Grants Commission (UGC).

Vision: Teaching & Research

To integrate ICT infrastructure in classrooms to facilitate e-learning and virtual teaching.
To encourage both students and faculty to extend their academic interactions beyond classrooms for developing a strong repository of digital resources of offline and online content to enhanced scientific learning experiences, including participation in seminars/ webinars, conferences etc.
To encourage the students and faculty to focus on contributing to the arena of scientific knowledge in Biotechnology, in particular and Life Sciences, in general for their academic and professional research pursuits.

Objectives:

To promote state-of-the-art of biotechnology research for the benefit of the public in the region, making higher education socially relevant & economically viable so that the technology percolates in the villages and also helps the growth of small scale cottage industries
To discover new biological traits and to create a national and global range of sustainable perspective with major impact on health, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food and the environment and further to bridge the gap between Academic and Industry
To develop sustainable trained human resources in biotechnology with special emphasis on Food & Fermentation Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology & Molecular Biotechnology
To generate the basic knowledge required to resolve practical socio-economic oriented issues encountered by the society in various sectors
To equip students with skillSets needed to adapt better for the changing global scenario and gain access to multiple career opportunities and provide inclusive education by making it accessible to all sections of society.
